Buckaroo wrestlers conclude regular season with two strong performances

The Monticello High School wrestling team closed out their regular season Saturday, January 20 at the Aztec, NM Duals tournament.
The Buckaroo mat men defeated Kirtland 48-12 and Farmington 43-28. They finished the event in a 30-30 tie with Robertson and Bayfield and were defeated by Bloomfield 60-16.
Javlin Robison led the way for the Buckaroos with a perfect 4-0 performance at the tournament. Robison got three wins by fall and the other was a dominating 11-0 major decision.
Landon Shumway and Joshua Wheeler each were 3-1 at the tourney. Shumway earned three wins by fall and Wheeler added a fall and a strong 14-1 major decision.
Thomas Fullmer finished 2-1 earning both wins by fall. Treydon Harris ended the day 3-2 with all of his wins by fall. Tavon Black earned two wins by fall and was 2-2 for the day. 
Tyson Wheeler earned two wins by fall for the Buckaroos. Ronnie Harris and Camren Carpenter each added a win by fall.
Chandler Henderson and Zac Thayn each were 2-0 for the weekend. Henderson earned both wins by fall and Thayn put up a fall and a 15-point technical fall victory.
On Wednesday, January 18 MHS hosted teams from San Juan and Whitehorse. Seniors Javlin Robison, Treydon Harris, and Joshua Wheeler along with their parents were honored prior to the match.
The Buckaroos were 9-3 in head-to-head matches with San Juan and 1-0 in matches with Whitehorse on the night.
Buckaroo Treydon Harris led off, earning a first period fall over Grady Lacy (SJ). Harris also earned a win by fall in the first period over Koyer Johnson (SJ).
Ronnie Harris battled with San Juan’s Rigley LaGiglia for nearly three periods, but earned an exciting win by fall with only 13 seconds left in the match.
Buckaroo freshman Landon Shumway wrestled two tough matches on the night, earning a third period win by fall over San Juan’s Treshon Billie and taking Deklan Helquist (SJ) to the wire in an 8-7 nail biter with Helquist getting the narrow victory.
Monticello’s Joshua Wheeler battled Nicholas Joe of San Juan, earning a win by fall in the third period after 5:47 of hard wrestling. Wheeler also earned a first period win by fall over Peter Hoopes (SJ).
San Juan’s Logan Keith earned a close sudden victory win over Buckaroo Tyson Wheeler. In a later match, Wheeler earned a strong second period fall over Chance Laws (SJ).
Zac Thayn earned two big wins for the Buckaroos, with a first period fall over Bronco Chance Laws and a second period win by fall over Logan Keith (SJ).
Chandler Henderson wrestled hard for the Buckaroos but was defeated by San Juan’s JD Palmer by fall in the second period. Javlin Robison got to work quickly, defeating Dante Silas of Whitehorse by fall in the first period.
This Friday, January 27 the Buckaroos host the 1A Division B Tournament at Monticello High School.
The tournament begins at 10 a.m. and will run throughout the day with the finals anticipated to begin around 3 p.m.
