Broncos prep for state volleyball and cross country tournaments

The San Juan Bronco volleyball team is ready for the state tournament following the conclusion of their regular season.

The Broncos dropped their final home game of the season on October 14 to the Emery Spartans. The Broncos dropped the first set to the Spartans 25-13, in the second set the Broncos closed the gap losing 25-19.

The Broncos continued to trend in the right direction as they won the third set of the night in a nail-bitingly close 26-24 score. From there, the Spartans pulled away to finish the match in the fourth set winning 25-12.

The loss brought the Broncos record to 6-17 on the year. The final regular season match was supposed to be against the Grand County Red Devils in Moab. The Devils were 14-9 on the year, and had beaten the Broncos 3-1 in Blanding in September.

The Broncos will look ahead to the state tournament where they’ll be on the road this Saturday in Roosevelt for the first two rounds of the state tournament. If the Broncos beat American Leadership Academy they'll face number one ranked Union High in the second round of the single elimination tournament

Cross country
The San Juan cross country teams finished the year at the Region 12 meet in Helper, UT at the Carbon Country Club golf course.

Both boys and girls teams placed fourth, which is too low to qualify the entire team for the state meet. However, two individual Bronco runners did qualify on their own.

Junior Ella Lyman finished ninth at the regional to qualify for the 3A girls state meet. Lyman finished her 5K race in 22:23.

Senior Cameron Jensen finished tenth at the regional to qualify for the 3A boys state meet. Jensen finished the 5K race in 17:31.

Both Lyman and Jensen will run at the state meet on Thursday, October 22 at Soldier Hollow in Midway.

Also scoring at the regional meet for the girls team is Lydia Pugh, who finished in 17th place. Pugh was followed by Sofia Hook (23), Saylor Perkins (24), and Ashley Goff (29). Cheyenne Blackhorse and Josie Lott round out the varsity team.

The boys team had a close pack of varsity scorers, including Spencer Jensen (30), Conner Black (31), Edward Lyman (33) and Daniel Jolley (35), who all scored for the Broncos. Toby Ward and Travis Black also ran for the varsity team.
