Bronco cross country kicks off year with win

The San Juan High School cross country team opened their season with a bang at the Boggy Draw Bear Chase in Dolores, CO on August 20. Despite not being an easy 5K course, both teams performed well with several runners posting personal best times.

The boys raced to a first-place finish with all five of their scoring runners in the top 15.

The Broncos were led by a third place finish by sophomore Edward Lyman, who came in with a time of 18:51.

He was followed in fourth place by senior Spencer Jensen who came in at 19:38 and freshman Abe Lyman who finished eighth with a personal-best 20:30.

Next across the line was sophomore Toby Ward in 13th place with a time of 20:45 and senior Daniel Jolley in 14th place with a time of 20:59. Rounding out the top seven runners are junior Dakota Long (22:09) and sophomore Tatum Begay (23:12).

The girls team also did well, despite missing several of their runners. Senior Ella Lyman paced the Lady Broncos with a seventh-place finish and a time of 24:44.

She was followed by senior Saylor Perkins, who came in 20th with a time of 27:42. Both Lyman and Perkins improved on their 2020 time on the Dolores course, with Lyman taking off nearly a minute and Perkins taking off almost three minutes.

The pair was followed by a trio of runners coming in 34th, 35th, and 37th, including freshman Taryn Nielson with a time of 33:09, sophomore Megan Black with a time of 33:24, and freshman Tzosilah Etsitty with a time of 35:55.

This week, the Bronco harriers head to Monroe for a Region 12 meet at South Sevier on Wednesday, August 25.
