San Juan High School Football Head Coach Barkley Christensen was named 2023 Football Coach of the year by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA) on Monday, November 20.
The honor comes just nine days after Christensen led the Broncos to their third straight 2A Utah State Championship. In the seven years since he took over as head coach, his teams have won 63 games while losing just 19.
In the past three seasons they have lost just once and finished the 2023 season riding a state-leading 37-game winning streak. The mark is a new school record and the third-longest winning streak in Utah high school football history.
Coach Christensen has repeatedly stated that his main inspiration is his players and his deepest source of pride at the conclusion of each of these past three championship seasons has been experiencing their joy in success.
In addition to his other accomplishments, with his third straight title this season Christensen joined an elite group of only seven other Utah coaches who have accomplished that feat or better. He is now second among Utah coaches all-time for most consecutive victories.
The championships and accolades are only the outward manifestations of Barkley Christensen’s unwavering dedication and ongoing sacrifice for the San Juan football program.
He has truly gone above and beyond to inspire, mentor, and lead his players to success, not only as athletes, but as honorable, character-driven young men.
Congratulations, Coach Christensen. The 2023 UHSAA Coach of the Year honor is well-deserved.
