San Juan boys close out 2019 with three wins and two losses
The San Juan High School boys basketball team closed out 2019 with three wins and two losses December 17 to 28.
The Broncos cruised past Monticello 77-34 in the two rivals’ only meeting this season on December 17. They beat Bayfield, CO 65-41 two nights later to move to 8-0 on the year.
But San Juan struggled in the opening game of the Steve Hodson Cancer Classic in Cedar City, UT the day after Christmas. They suffered their first loss of the year to the 4A Canyon View Falcons 76-49.
In game two of the tournament, the Broncos battled the 4A second place Hurricane Tigers and kept the game close but were handed their second loss of the year, 54-47.
San Juan bounced back in the closing game of the tournament December 28 for a win over Rowland Hall 57-44.
Through the first 11 games of the season, the Broncos have scored 725 points, good enough for fourth place in 3A boys basketball. They’ve allowed 573 points on the season, which is sixth-best in 3A.
With a 9-2 overall record, they sit in second place behind Manti in the UHSAA RPI standings headed into the new year. The Deseret News ranks the Broncos fourth behind Manti, Richfield, and Judge Memorial.
San Juan opens 2020 with two Region 12 matchups against South Sevier Friday, December 10 and Richfield Saturday, December 11, so they have a shot to move ahead of the Wildcats in those Deseret News rankings this week.
