SJR Newspaper Rock race is Saturday

Racers will gather in Indian Creek canyon on Saturday, October 11 for the eighth annual Newspaper Rock 10K. The 10K race, which snakes 6.2 miles through spectacular Indian Creek canyon, begins at Newspaper Rock and finishes near the Dugout Ranch.
Organizers expect more than 100 racers for the 10K race.
An additional feature of the event this year is a 26K trail run, which begins at 8,350 feet altitude at Foy Lake and finishes at 5,500 feet at the Dugout Ranch. This represents a drop of 2,850 feet, or more than one half of a mile, over the course of the run.
The trail run begins at Foy Lake at 8 a.m. Racers will head down the Shay Ridge road until it crosses Indian Creek. At that point, runners will begin a six-mile trail run down the canyon to Newspaper Rock. From there, the trail runners will finish on the 10K race course.
The lead runners in the trail run are likely to pass the 10K start line right before the start of the 10K race. The 10K race begins at 10 a.m. Walkers can begin at Newspaper Rock at 9:30 a.m.
The 10K race drops gently over the course of the course, with a series of turns as the road drops through the fall colors. The 10K course drops 750 feet in altitude.
Racers can pick up a race packet at the San Juan Record office in Monticello on Friday afternoon. The office is located at 49 South Main Street.
Runners can also pick up a packet before the race at the starting line of each race.
The San Juan Record is the title sponsor of the annual race. Major sponsors include Blue Mountain Hospital and Utah Navajo Health Systems.
