With the conclusion of high school state track championships in Provo on May 15, so too concludes the 2008-2009 high school sports season.

Buckaroos Macee Nielson and Emmanuelle Reay closed out the season with in winning fashion by capturing state championship titles.

Nielson defended her two titles, in the 3200 meter and 1600 meter runs, in impressive fashion.

The determined sophomore runner lowered her 1A state record in the 3200 she set two weeks ago by posting a time of 11:04.01.  That’s five and a half minutes a mile, folks!  She captured the 1600 m in 5:16, the next closest runner 15 seconds behind.

She also placed sixth in the 800 meter run and anchored the medley relay team of Nichole Freestone, Loren Randall, and Rachel Beh that took second, although they would have won had it been an 1605 meter race.

Reay leapt a personal best to capture the 1A state high jump crown.  Tied with six other jumpers trying to make five feet even, Reay cleared the bar in her last effort, the only one of the seven to do so to win an event in which she has placed three years running.

Reay was also on the seventh place winning 4 x 100 meter relay team, along with sister Miriam Reay, Martha Beh and Ashley Moore.

Miriam Reay also placed in the 100 meter dash, coming in eighth.

The Beh sisters, Rachel and Martha, placed fifth and eighth respectively in the 400 m and also were on the sixth place 4 x 400 relay team.

Loren Randall also contributed to a determined Buckaroo effort that landed the girls in third place, behind St. Joesph’s and Rich high schools, with fifth place finishes in the 800 and 1600 meter races and a sixth place finish in the 4 x 400 relay to go with her medley medal.

Nichole Freestone, in addition to the medlay relay, ran on the sixth place winning 4 x 400 relay team and finished fifth individually in the 300 meter hurdles.

Buckaroo boys
The Buckaroo boys grabbed a medal or two as well, with three Buckaroos placing.

Adam Butler placed in three events, sixth in the 800 meter, fifth in the 3200 meter run and eighth in the 1600m.

Devin Wright captured a fourth in the Wright family event, javelin, and seventh in the 400m.

Jesse Barton came out of shot put retirement to capture a fifth place.

Bronco boys
The San Juan boys captured places in the traditional San Juan staples, the sprints and shot put.

Jace Holliday placed in four events, seconds in the 200m and 400m runs and thirds in the 100m and 4 x 100 m relay.

Drew Nielson, Colby Redd and Ryan Lyman were also on that relay team.  Kyle Shumway defended Bronco shot put honor, tossing the ball far enough for seventh place.  As a team, the Broncos placed fifth.

Taylor Francom raced to a seventh place finish in the 1600m. The medley relay team, Nielson, Redd, Lyman, and Francom, placed fourth.

Lady Broncos 7th
The Lady Bronco track team scored enough to place seventh as a team.  Megan Macdonald (110m hurdles) and Katie Hiatt (1600m) both landed third place medals in those events.  Kelli Meyer placed sixth in the 800 meter and Mackenzie Ward was eighth in the 3200m.

In the relays, the Lady Broncos found success, with the 4 x 100 team, Sade Kyles, Megan Macdonald, Sagan and Simone Shumway placing third, the 4 x 400 team, Brooke Bowring, Sagan Shumway, Megan Macdonald, and Meyer finishing fourth, and the medley team, Kyles, Courtney Macdonald, Bowring and Hiatt, winning fifth place.

Girl's Golf
Two Buckaroo golfers, Sarah Greenway and Shelby Lewis, made history last week by becoming the first Lady Buckaroos to play in a state golf tournament, in only the second year of girls golf in the state of Utah.

Led by coach Des Esplin and Sarah’s mom, Jennifer Acox, who lobbied long and hard for a girls golf team, the girls played in the inaugural 1A girls state golf championship in Delta.

Greenway, who shot 108, captured fifth place in the tournament and garnered First team All State honors, earning a trip to a nice banquet for her, her parents, grandfather Craig Leavitt (himself an all state golfer for the Bucks many years back), and great grandpa Grant, the original long time golf pro in Monticello.

For the boys, Chase Doucett and Jonah Cafferty played one day of the two day boys event for the Buckaroos. That’s a rap.
