GOP seeks applicants to replace Assessor

The San Juan County Republican party is looking for applicants to fill the open position of San Juan County Assessor. Rick Meyer retired as the assessor on June 15.
On June 9, the Utah State Tax Commission formally recommended that Meyer be removed from office, stating that the action is necessary “to protect the public interest and restore the integrity of the property tax system in San Juan County.”
Rather than going through a timely process with an uncertain outcome, Meyer announced his retirement. He was midway through his second term as San Juan County Assessor.
When a county official resigns mid-term, the political party of the elected individual nominates candidates to the San Juan County Commission for the appointment.
The Republican party San Juan Central Committee is beginning the task of accepting and vetting applicants ahead of ranking the top three candidates, which the county commission will consider and ultimately appoint.
Applications are being accepted from June 24 to July 8, with the party planning to interview candidates between July 9 and 13.

Applicants must be a registered member of the Republican Party for at least one year.
The appointment will likely be filled at the county commission meeting on July 15.
The selected individual will finish the remaining term through the last day of 2028.
San Juan County residents will vote on the county assessor in the 2028 election cycle.
Deputy Assessor Nathan Pitts will serve as Assessor until the appointment is made.
