Royer claims 2A’s top singles title, Broncos finish third

Mary Royer finished off her 2014 tennis season the way most athletes only dream of, as the first singles champion at the 2A state tennis tournament.
The San Juan High junior did so in impressive fashion, losing only one set on her way to the title.
In her first match, Royer faced Emma Gustafson of Summit Academy. Royer dominated Gustafson, winning the match in two sets, 6-0, 6-0.
In the semi-final round, Royer was matched up against Sarah Roston of Wasatch Academy, defeating her in three sets 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 to move on to the finals.
In the finals, Royer sealed the deal by beating Amanda Naylor of Manti in two sets, 6-2, 6-4.
As a team, the Lady Broncos finished in third place with eight team points. St. Joseph was first with 13 points, while Manti and Rowland Hall tie for second place with 12 points each.
Broncos who qualified and participated in the state tournament include Klea Hurst (second singles), Jessica Swenson (third singles), Jazmine Marks and Hannah Brown (first doubles) and Brittany Black and Brianna Pugh (second doubles).
Winning first round matches were Klea Hurst, Jazmine Brown and Hannah Brown, and Brittany Black and Brianna Pugh.
