Recycling effort off to a good start in Monticello
The Monticello Recycling Program is off to a running start thanks to contributions from the local US Forest Service, San Juan County Economic Development office, and many local volunteers.
After only three months of operation, the community members have filled the aluminum/tin bin twice, the #1 plastics bin once, and the newspaper bin twice. The program is seeing great participation.
During the past three months, local volunteers have donated time monitoring bins weekly to ensure a clean area around the bins and to remove some items inappropriately placed in the bins.
Volunteers report positive feedback and very little cross contamination. The #1 plastic bin has the most contamination; milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, and plastic bags are not #1 plastic and cannot be accepted.
Lids on glass and plastic items are not recyclable and should be removed.
