Record time, perfect conditions at Newspaper Rock 26K, 10K

A record number of runners enjoyed nearly perfect conditions at the Newspaper Rock 10K race on October 11 in spectacular Indian Creek canyon.
The 10K race featured a record-breaking time and more than 20 warriors participated in the Inagural 26K race.  The trail run began at Foys Lake and finished at the Dugout Ranch.
Overall winner of the trail race is Chris Martinez, of Moab, who covered the trail run in an astounding 1:54.22.  Close on his heels were two women, Melissa Beaury (1:56.45) and Keri Nelson (1:57.04). 
Fourth place was earned by Roger Stash in 1:57.23, followed by his brother Herbert Stash in 2:19.11.
The third place male is Britt Barton in 2:20.27.
Three women from Monticello covered the 26K course in 2:34.26.  They are Sherrill Bowring, Dianna Nielson and Shanna Black. 
Tyler Bird, a junior at Monticello High School, won the 6.2-mile 10K race in a record pace of 34:38.  
Finishing second is Jens Brewer in 38:10, followed by fellow MHS cross country team members Sheldon Black in 38:10 and Everett Hatch in 39:51.
The remainder of the top ten includes Kade Francom (40:21), Evan Ellingson (43:35), Ryan Bird (43:13), Dylan Bird (43:13), Dan Stenta (44:48) and Kendal Harris (46:12).
Kendal Harris, a sophomore at MHS, was the top female finisher.  She was followed by Cindy Bradford in 46:21 and Marissa Black in 48:41.
Bird bested the prior course record of 35:04, set by Taylor Francom in 2008.  The course record for women is 36:38, set by Macee Nielson in 2010.
Winners in the mens group up to age 28 are Everett Hatch (39:51), Kade Francom (40:21) and Evan Ellingson (43:35).  
Winners in the mens group between age 29 and 39 are Dustin Darrington (46:17), Paul Plemmons (46:23), and Gary Bronson (48:27). 
Winners in the mens group age 40 and up are Dan Stenta (44:48), James Cross (47:23), and Jeff Hunt (48:23). 
Winners in the womens group up to age 28 are Phoebe Johnson (53:00), Celeste Hillhouse (53:05), and Mariah Harris (55:46). 
Winners in the womens group between age 29 and 39 are Dawnan Wojcik (50:12), Tridan Faucett (50:45) and Beth Millward (51:34). 
Winners in the womens group age 40 and up are Bette Ann Gilbert (53:18), Tamara Gallegos (55:07), and Jodene Fisher (58:47). 
Nearly 130 people participated in the race, which begins at Newspaper Rock and finishes near the Dugout Ranch.
Under the direction of Mindy and Scott Saunders, sponsors of the annual event include the San Juan Record, Blue Mountain Hospital, Utah Navajo Health Systems, High Altitude Communications, San Juan Pharmacy - Monticello, Canyonlands Lodging, Farm Bureau Financial Services, Inn at the Canyons, Schafer’s Auto, Blue Mountain Foods, PJs, All-Star Tumbling, North Wash Outfitters, and Maverik.
Organizations who offer support include the City of Monticello, San Juan County Visitor Services, Utah Department of Transportation, San Juan County Fair, Utah Highway Patrol, Dugout Ranch, San Juan County Sheriff’s Office, the Monticello Second Ward Boy Scouts and the Monticello High School Cross Country team.
