Pieter Castetter Haller

Pieter Castetter Haller, was born on July 23, 1959 to Benjamin Franklin Haller and Johanna Dijkgraaf in Monticello, UT. The family lived on what is now called Haller Road east of Monticello.

Years later, they moved to the homestead were Pieter’s brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sherri, live now. Pieter’s parents divorced when he was around five years old.

Piet grew up around farm animals and remembered hoeing beans. He remembered his dad taking he and Jim on many trips, including to California, Yellowstone, and many Sunday fishing trips. His father was always there for the boys as they grew up.

When Pieter was 14 and Jim was 18, their Father died. Jim was all set to go into the military. Pieter moved to Washington to live with his aunt and uncle.

While in Washington, Pieter was active in playing football and wrestling. During his senior year, he moved to Cortez, CO to live with his Mother. His step-father was a diesel mechanic and taught him many things. Pieter studied gas and diesel mechanics and welding at the Vo-Tech.

While living in Cortez, he would often come to Monticello to visit family and friends. He often stayed with Lacy Steele; one of many families that adopted him over the years.

While visiting Monticello, he met Terry Lynn Rogers. They only dated three weeks before becoming engaged to be married. Eight months later, they married.

They moved to Farmington, NM and lived there less than a year. Pieter was then able to get a job in Monticello and move back home.

A daughter, Lacy Castetter Haller, was born, followed nine years later by another daughter, Kimberly Lynn Haller, and ten years later by Sarah Elizabeth Haller.

Pieter was always joking. Sometimes his jokes were so bad that Terry banned jokes when he was at home. That was all right though, he had many friends and co-workers to play jokes on.

He always had so many stories to tell. If you were fortunate enough to be one of his friends, you were always very entertained.

It didn’t matter who you were, he was a friend to everyone he met. People could always count on him to help them fix their tractors.

He loved to farm. His number one goal was to move back to Monticello and farm. He did it for many years. It was a difficult decision to quit farming. He knew that he would have to get deeper in debt to make it work.

Pieter decided to leave farming to spend more time with his family. Since then he worked at many jobs. He worked at AmeriGas in Blanding for several years.

One winter, the driver would start up his truck and turn on the heater so it would be toasty warm when he got in. Pieter turned off the heater, turned on the air conditioner and shoveled the cab full of snow. He was always so fun at AmeriGas Christmas parties, that after he no longer worked there, he was still invited.

In 1997, Pieter started working for the San Juan County Road Department. He felt like that was the job for him. He loved the work and loved the people. He also loved to play jokes on everyone there.

He got along with everyone. Piet not only loved to farm and driving trucks; but he also loved his wife and daughters very much.

He is preceded in death by his father, Benjamin Franklin Haller, step father J.T. (Sonny) Bennett, and father-in-law Howard M. Rogers, Jr.

He is survived by wife Terry Lynn, daughters Lacy (Geoff) Harcourt, Kimberly Lynn, and Sarah Elizabeth, granddaughters Mikayla and Ciara, and one more on the way, brother James D. (Sherie) Haller, mother Ann Bennett, and many more in-laws, out- laws, and cousins too!

The family would like you to send them stories, thoughts, or practical jokes that Piet had played on you to:
