Iwan M. Black, Sr.

August 24, 1928 ~ August 18, 2009

Iwan M. Black, Sr., 80, returned to his Father in Heaven and into the arms of his waiting family on Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at the McKay-Dee Hospital, where he was surrounded by his family following a brief illness.

He was born August 24, 1928 in Blanding, UT, a son of George Henry and Louise Ann Brown Black. He was raised in Blanding and later graduated from Utah State University.

Iwan married Gracie Rhea Jones on March 10, 1954 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They lived in Weber and Morgan Counties while they raised their family of eight children.

Gracie Rhea died August 26, 1996. Later he met and married Carol Coffin Bolar on June 20, 1998 in the Ogden Temple. At this time he added Carol’s two children to his already large family and loved them deeply.

He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served a mission in the Louisiana-Texas Mission.

He was a Seventy and served faithfully in many other callings within the church. He and Carol served a Stake Mission in the Washington Terrace South Stake.

He served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Iwan was a school teacher for 20 years in the Ogden City School District. He also worked on the ice dock at Farr’s Ice Cream Company for 35 years.

He was a member of the Utah Trail and Endurance Riders Horse Club. Iwan loved gardening, taking videos and photos, camping and was a humorous storyteller with a wonderful sense of humor.

Surviving are his wife Carol, of Ogden; three sons and seven daughters, Iwan Jr. (Lyndel) Black, LeeRoy (Annett) Black, Gwen Furse, Annette (George) Beeton, Jane (Curtis) Olson, Joan Harrison, Esther (Raymond) Gordier, Shirley (Peter) Funk, Julie (Brad) Weir, Robert (Suzanne) Bolar; 40 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters, his first wife Gracie Rhea, son-in-law Ronald Furse, two grandsons and one great-granddaughter.

Funeral services were held August 24 at 2 p.m. at the Mt. Lewis 5th Ward Chapel, 550 East 900 North, Ogden, UT.

Friends may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Monday at the Ward Chapel from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m.

Interment at Lindquist’s Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 Washington Blvd., Ogden, UT.
