Glenna Jean Harris

Services for lifelong area resident Glenna Jean Harris will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 19 at the Lewis Arriola Community Center.

Glenna was born on August 9, 1935 in Cortez, CO the daughter of Roy J. and Lillian H. (Tracy) Retherford. She passed away on February 1, 2010 at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 74.

A third generation rancher, Glenna’s family has been ranching in the area for 97 years. She was a member of the Southwest Colorado Cattleman’s Association and in 2009, Glenna was voted Stockman of the Year, only the third woman ever to receive such distinction.

Glenna spent 30 years teaching in the local schools and found that she enjoyed all of her students.

In addition to her devotion to ranching, Glenna enjoyed playing the piano, watching movies, and tending her flowers. Most of all, Glenna loved her family deeply.

Surviving Glenna are daughter Gayel (Phil) Alexander of Lewis; granddaughter Kaytlyn Alexander; step-daughters Vicki (Earl) Broderick of Cortez, Carol Brown of Blanding, UT, and Sandy (Ralph)Lard of Cortez; and step-son, Gary (Lori) Harris of Dolores.

She is also survived by step-grandchildren Roni (Scott) Anthony of Cortez, Kristie (Jim) Fitchett-Wagner of Ellensburg, WA, Melissa (Burt) Chaffin of Texas, Brittney Harris and Emily Harris, Steven (Cassandra) Dedloff, Shadyne Scott-Neely, Amanda Scherer, and Bobbie Dodd Keeling; and by step-great grandchildren, Justyne and Grant Anthony, Shandi Fitchett-Wagner, Donovan Chaffin, Jayden and Madison Dedloff, Samantha Neely, and C.J. and Isiah Scherer; as well as by nieces and nephews, Melanie McAfee, Michael (Angie) McAfee, Suzi (Darin) Labato, and Buzz (Lydia) McAfee; and by all their children, Shacey and Cody Filener, Brian and Mandy McAfee, Ty Sabin, and Morgan McAfee.

Glenna is preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Lillian Retherford; husband, Thomas Dodd Harris in 2007; step son, Wendell Harris; sister, Guyrene R. McAfee; and great nephew, Mark McAfee.
