Gary Reed Wilson

February 28, 1942 ~ April 18, 2012
Beloved father, brother and friend, Gary Reed Wilson passed away peacefully on the evening of April 18, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Pleasant Hill, CA, after a long fight with cancer.
Gary was born on February 28, 1942, in Moab, UT, to Heber Reed Wilson and Helen Mar (Nielson) Wilson.
Gary grew up in Monticello riding his horse, Trigger, around town and working at his father’s service station. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1960, attended Brigham Young University, and got an electronics certificate from tech school.
He married Kathryn (Nielson) Wilson in 1961 and together they had four children: Corry, Christine, Ashley, and Amber. He worked at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, UT for a few years and then as a clothing sales representative in Iowa, Florida, Georgia and Texas for over 20 years.
In 1997, Gary retired and returned to Monticello to care for his elderly parents.
Gary loved to garden. During the summer it was easy to find him working either in his or mom’s garden or working on their lawns.
We loved dad’s great sense of humor. If we were ever in need of a poem or jingle he could come up with one in short order. He enjoyed feeding the hummingbirds in his backyard, a love we think he got from his parents. He would often stand right next to the feeder and let the birds circle around him.
His greatest love was spending time with his family. Whether it was to work on projects, take rides up the mountain or just relax and visit, he loved being with his family. We could count on a phone call if it had been more than a couple of days since talking to him.
He was our “go to” guy for any project; such as painting the house, concocting crazy ideas to build chicken coops, troubleshooting car problems, giving suggestions to make the garden grow better, or coming up with the next “fun” thing to eat. He was a generous man with a kind heart.
Surviving Gary are his best friend Kathryn Wilson, his children Corry (Marianne) Wilson of Atlanta, GA; Christine Wilson of Martinez, CA; Ashley (Geoff) Adams of Pleasant Hill, CA; and Amber (Shayne) Crandell of Beaverton, OR; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild; siblings Anne (Kelly) Willis of Pleasant Grove, UT; Jim (Jan) Wilson of Cedar City, UT; and his uncle George (Ruth) Wilson of Escondido, CA.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Reed and Helen Wilson.
Services for Gary Wilson will be held on Saturday, April 28, at the Monticello LDS Stake Center on Main Street. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m. followed by the funeral services at noon. A graveside service will be held immediately following the funeral at the Monticello Cemetery.
