Nine local students earn Sterling Scholar title

Three students from San Juan County earned the title of Sterling Scholar and six more were named Runner-Up at the annual Southeast Utah Sterling Scholar competition on March 8.
Katie Hiatt won the sterling scholar award in the general scholarship category.  She has been involved in a host of athletic, academic and service activities at San Juan High, including competing in an iron man half triathlon for breast cancer awareness. 
Katie will graduate from San Juan High School this spring.  At the same time, she will earn an Associates of Science degree from Utah State University San Juan Campus. 
Hiatt plans to attend Southern Utah University.  She is the daughter of Kim and Steve Hiatt.
Devin Wright won the sterling scholar award in the social sciences category.  Devin has been involved in just about everything at Monticello High School for several years.  He has been a student body officer twice, including student body president this year.
Devin has shown academic and athletic excellence as an all-state athlete in several sports.  He is the Wendy’s Heisman award winning for the entire state of Utah.
Wright is currently exploring options to compete in track and field at the collegiate level.  He is the son of Lisa and Doug Wright.
Tya Manygoats is the sterling scholar in the business and marketing category. She was the CEO of Lickety Split, a nonprofit business that sells chocolates and confections.  Tya went on a summer student exchange to Germany and worked closely with a foreign exchange student at San Juan High School. 
She was captain of the Bronco cross country team that brought home a second place trophy from the state meet.  She is the daughter of Jean Atene.
Runners up from Monticello High in the sterling scholar competition include Macee Nielsom in science, Loren Randall in trade and technology, and Miriam Reay in English.
Runners up from San Juan High School include Nathan Webb in music and Josh Meyer in mathematics.
Brittany Redhouse, of Whitehorse High School, is a runner up in family and consumer science.
A total of 99 students from San Juan, Grand, Emery and Carbon counties competed in 12 categories. A winner and two runners up are named in each category.
