Local man killed in deer/motorcycle crash

A San Juan County man was killed on July 5 when he struck a deer on his motorcycle while traveling on US Highway 191 just south of Monticello.
Rodney Workman, age 66 of Blanding, hit the deer while traveling southbound approximately two miles south of Monticello.  The area of the crash is about one mile north of the boundary of a new deer control fence that was installed along the highway in 2015.
Utah Highway Patrol officials state that Workman was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.  He was thrown from the motorcycle and suffered severe head injuries.  He died while being transported to St Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO.
Workman retired in 2016 after a long career at San Juan Hospital.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, July 12 at noon at the Blanding Stake Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 88 West 800 North.
Visitation will be held on July 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the San Juan Mortuary, 370 South Main Street in Blanding.
Interment will follow the services in the Blanding City Cemetery.
A Gold Star Father, Rodney Workman is the father of Jason Workman, a member of the elite U.S. Navy Seal Team Six who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2011.
Each year, Rodney Workman organized the Jason Workman Memorial Ride.  The group of riders on motorcycles led the way at the Blanding Independence Day parade on July 4.
In 2016, a bridge crossing the San Juan River at Mexican Hat on US Highway 163 was renamed the Jason Workman Memorial Bridge.
