New port of entry opens
A newly remodeled Port of Entry opened in the past week in Monticello. A painting on the wall in the new Port shows a scene from the Monticello Port in 1965.
Painted by Weighman Mike Boulter at the time, the scene shows, from left to right, Weighman Jim Hoyt, an unidentified truck driver, Weighman LeGrand Wilberg, and Monticello City Police Officer Earl Pehrson.
Bert Giles can be seen through the window on the left as he makes his way into the office. The old weigh station closed in February, 1972.
The painting was picked up at a yard sale when Bert and Donna Giles moved from Monticello in 1993. It was presented to the new port by Dawn Boyle.
