Monticello Bucks fall to Parowan Rams

With a crispness in the air - it felt like a perfect football night in Monticello as the Buckaroo football team strapped on their helmets to take on the Parowan Rams with both teams looking for their first 1A South Division win.
However, even before kick-off, he Bucks sideline looked like the land of the walking wounded with several key players out with season ending injuries – QB Spencer Knudsen (ACL) and back-up QB Brayson Wilcox (shoulder). Therefore, third string junior QB Mark Beh got the start.
Thomas Anderson started the night off right with an outstanding 45 yard kick-off return, setting the Buckaroos up with great field position. However, the Bucks couldn’t move the ball and had to punt.
Parowan then started its ground and pound running game and passed it in for the first score of the quarter with 5:29 to go. The PAT failed and the Rams lead 6-0. Parowan scored another TD with 0:40 to go in the quarter and led 14-0 after its two-point conversion succeeded effectively ending the first quarter.
The second quarter found Monticello again struggling to move the ball and Parowan had its running game firing on all cylinders. The Rams racked up 26 unanswered points in the quarter and took a 40-0 lead into the locker room at half.
In the third quarter, the teams went back and forth without a score until Parowan tacked on another score to make the score 47-0.
In the final quarter, the Bucks came out with good intensity and finally made some plays.
In the quarter, Monticello turned to its fourth QB of the season when Thomas Anderson came in and made some plays, however, he went out of the game with an injury after getting practically bent in half backwards.
Fifth QB Max Hedglin, usually a WR, took the first snap after Anderson exited the game and scampered in for a nice 14 yard TD run for Monticello’s lone score. The PAT failed and the Bucks trailed 47-6 until the final horn sounded.
Offensively, the Bucks only managed 84 yards in total offense for the game. 64 of those yards came on the ground in 28 attempts.
Thomas Anderson collected 52 of those yards on 17 rushes. In the collective passing game between its three QBs, Monticello connected on only 3 of 16 pass attempts for 20 yards. Every positive yardage pass was caught by Thomas Anderson, who had all 20 receiving yards with three catches.
Defensively, the Bucks played hard to try and contain the vaunted Parowan ground attack which boasted some large runners, but was overmatched as the Rams popped big runs of 56, 25, and 52 yards for second quarter TDs.
One positive note from the game is that the Buckaroos denied Parowan the Utah State HS record for consecutive shut-out football games, halting the streak at four.
1A South Division play continues Friday, October 13 when Monticello (2-6 and 0-1 in South Division) hosts the Milford Tigers (6-1 and 1-0). This will be Senior Night so come out and support the team and its seniors!

Volleyball
On Tuesday, the No. 3 Deseret News 1A ranked Buckaroo volleyball team traveled to Moab to take on the Grand Red Devils. The varsity girls played hard and kept things close but lost in three sets 24-26, 22-25, and 23-25. Grand came out aggressive and its play caused the Bucks some issues.
