MHS student is second runner-up in state poetry competition

For some, poetry is all about eating cheese and drinking wine and contemplating the existence of the cosmos. But for Samara Wells, a senior of Monticello High School, poetry is more than just a fancy group of sentences. She says it’s all about, “Letting my personality shine through the words of the poems.”
On March 21, Samara did exactly that when she participated in the Poetry Out Loud competition for the State of Utah.
Eleven high schools each sent one student to the Rose Wagner Theater Performing Arts Center to recite memorized poems.
Samara fought her way to the finals, where she managed to take the spot of second runner-up.
The three poems she performed are: Edgar Alan Poe’s “Dream Within A Dream”, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “Children’s Hour”, and Jimmy Santiago Baca’s “Who Understands Me But Me”.
The competition encourages students to explore the arts and test their talents. Appreciation goes to all the teachers and students who participated, and the best of luck goes to Samara as she shares her poetry flair with others.
