Meet held on new San Juan High track

SPORTS SHORTS
Ok, I’ll start with a cliché: If you build it, they will come.”
All the high schools in the San Juan Schoool District met on San Juan High’s brand new track on a gorgeous Spring day on April 4 for the first annual San Juan District Track Meet.
Both the San Juan boys and girls teams captured the team championships, with the boys totaling 167.5 points to Monticello’s 118.5 and the girls of San Juan winning 174 to 133 for Monticello in the 16-event event.
Multiple multiple winners highlighted the event, led by senior Ammon Mitchell of San Juan, who captured three events, the 110 meter hurdles, 100 meter, and the long jump.
San Juaners Jade Grover and Christian Sherrow were double winners, along with Monticello junior Jake Duncan.  Senior Grover was the champ in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs.  Sherrow, a sophomore, captured a difficult double, the 800 meter and the 200 meter, while Duncan was first in the 300 hurdles and high jump.
For the girls, four San Juan athletes each won two events.  Senior Sade Kyles captured both the 100 and 200 meters, senior Kelli Meyer won the 400 and 800 meter, Cortney Macdonald, another Bronco senior, won the 300 hurdles and the long jump and Samantha Giddings, just a junior, won the shot put and discus.
Individual winners for the Buckaroo gals are junior Kaitlin Clark, 100 hurdles, freshman Bailey Goodwine, 1600 meter, and sophomore Arianna Reay, high jump.  San Juan senior Lindsey Christensen was first in the javelin.
Boys who won once were Max Morley, a SJ freshman who won the 400, Tommi Paasiho, a SJ junior who won the discus, and Monticelloians PJ Leiataua, a junior who earned the shot put title and senior Ford Welch, the javelin champ.
The Broncos will host an invitational on “The Track” in two weeks time. For all the results of all the events, go to runnercard.com.
On the diamond
In baseball, San Juan and Monticello teams stand at opposite ends of the spectrum, with the fourth ranked Broncos sitting atop the Region 15 standings with a 6-1 record, while the Buckaroos are at the bottom with an 0-6 record.
It was no surprise then when the Broncos won in Monticello on Thursday 27-6.  The Broncos pounded out ten doubles, including three by Dylan Richmond in the dominating win.  Bobby Bowring had one of those doubles to go with a triple in the win.
Austin Maloy and Easton Nielson both doubled for the Buckaroos as Logan Meyer picked up the complete game win on the mound for the Broncos, bringing his record to 6-3 on the season.
The only region loss for the Broncos came at Richfield, when they split a double header with the Wildcats.  The Broncos captured the first game 12-3, but lost the second game, 10-2.
In between their region contests, the Broncos squeezed in a game at Farmington NM and lost in a slugfest, 14-12.  Richmond homered and Bowring tripled in the loss.
The Buckaroos hosted Richfield in a double header last week, too, losing both games in the set, 13-3 and 10-5.
In the second game, the Bucks had a 5-4 lead heading into the sixth inning but saw the Wildcats score six to get the come from behind win.
The fourth ranked Bronco softball team traveled to Payson for a tournament, playing four times against 3A, 4A, and 5A competition, winning two of those games, 5-3 over Lehi and 8-2 over Uintah.
Juanita Royer had a homer and a triple in the two wins and Tatianna SueSue and Justin Hutchins picked up the wins on the mound.
Masters thoughts
Let’s see, a guy named Bubba (his given name is Gerry, in case you were wondering), who swings mightily at the golfball with a pink driver, wins the Masters.  That puts him up there with other first name only Masters winners, Tiger, Phil, Seve, Jack, Arnold, Nick, Tom, Gary.  I’m ok with that.
Since we ended with talk about golf, shall we end with a golf cliché?
How about several. “Bubba’s a proven winner. He has a passion for the game. He has a great feel for the game. You can’t say enough about him. He’s the real deal. He’s in a league of his own. He’s silenced all the critics. He’s silenced all the naysayers. Well Jim, that’s the best he could have done from there.
“It’s a game of inches. It’s going down to the wire. It’s a real pressure cooker. The fans are getting their money’s worth.”
