Local children eligible to join the fun at Community Garden Club
Life Mission School, located between Monticello and Blanding, has been awarded funding from the United States Community Play Fund, supported by the LEGO Foundation, to launch an engaging Garden Club for children in the community. Because of the grant, every child ages 4+ can attend for free for four days!
The Afterschool Garden Club began on January 7 and will be available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Students will be picked up from either Blanding or Monticello Elementary at 3 PM and returned to the school parking lot by 5:30 PM. Parents are welcome to bring their child and stay to enjoy the warm greenhouse.
The group will garden, create art, provide a snack, and help students complete homework. Students are free to play, garden, do art, do homework, and relax.
The initiative is made possible through ChangeX and the LEGO Foundation’s dedication to learning through play, inspiring kids to connect with nature, learn through hands-on experiences, and develop a love for gardening.
The new Garden Club will create opportunities for children to explore the natural world while learning practical skills like planting, nurturing, and harvesting their own gardens. The program will emphasize creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving, reflecting the promotion of play-based learning as a key part of child development.
“We are thrilled to bring this Garden Club to life, thanks to the support of the LEGO Foundation and ChangeX,” said Miriam Peterson, Founder of Life Mission School. “This provides a space where children can grow their curiosity, connect with nature, and gain confidence as they see their hard work blossom.”
The Garden Club will take full advantage of Life Mission School’s outdoor learning environment, including its high tunnel greenhouse and raised garden beds. Activities will include planting vegetables, flowers, and herbs, and creating flower pots for Mother’s Day.
The LEGO Foundation aims to create playful, educational opportunities for children. With support from ChangeX, Life Mission School is ready to cultivate learning and joy through the Garden Club.
