Kent Cantrell

Candidate for San Juan County Surveyor
My name is Kent Cantrell, most everyone knows me as Sam. I am currently serving as the Chief Deputy Surveyor for San Juan County. I am running unopposed for the office of San Juan County Surveyor.
My wife and best friend is Robin, who has been an elementary school teacher for the San Juan School District in Bluff for 25 years, and who will always be my inspiration and motivation.
For the past 15 years, I have been working full time in the San Juan County Surveyors’ office. Initially, under the direction of Mr. Doug Pehrson, and currently under the direction of the County Surveyor Mr. David Bronson, both of whom have contributed to my knowledge and success as a Land Surveyor, and both of whom I will be forever grateful and indebted to. I want the public to know that I pledge to continue to uphold the office of the County Surveyor in a manner consistent with the commitment and professionalism of my predecessors.
I am an active member of the Utah Council of Land Surveyors, Utah Association of County Surveyors, National Society of Professional Surveyors, and I am a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in the State of Utah.
The County Surveyor has an obligation to you the Public and to the County Executive Body, to ensure that the duties set forth in Utah State Code 17-23 (The County Surveyors Act) are adhered to.
In a nutshell; that means to protect the Bona Fide Rights of you as land and property owners, by maintaining, protecting and perpetuating the Public Land Survey System, which is the foundation for land ownership, and the foundation for the enjoyment of your most basic right to the pursuit of happiness; that being, owning your own property that is surveyed, monumented and recorded as your own.
The County Surveyor is one of the four original elected positions in the State of Utah, along with the Sheriff, Recorder, and Water Master. As well, the County Surveyor is one of only four elected officials that are required to have State licensure or certification to hold office, the others being the Attorney, Assessor, and the Sheriff.
The County Seat television program in conjunction with the Utah Association of County Surveyors recently aired a very educational episode on the County Surveyor. If you have ever wondered what the County Surveyor is about, go to http://www.utahcountiesmatter.org/county-surveyor/ to view the episode. Also, anyone can contact me personally with any questions or concerns and I will do my best to help.
We have a very special and unique right in this great country of ours that few other countries in the world have; the right to own our own property! It is the duty of the County Surveyor to ensure that right is protected by maintaining the foundational survey system that was established so early in our Nation’s history, and that is what I pledge to continue to do!
Thank you for the opportunity to serve, and I would appreciate your vote!
