High schools to present diplomas to 200+ students

Graduates from area high schools will receive diplomas this week as the 2008-09 school year winds to a close. An expected 205 graduates and their families and friends will hear Pomp and Circumstance and be given last minute advice before they are sent out in the world. The San Juan School District operates five high schools.

Approximately 50 students are expected to receive diplomas at Monticello High School at ceremonies set to begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20 in the high school auditorium. John Dowell is the featured guest speaker at the event, which will also include remarks by valedictorian Linda Barton and salutatorian Heather Holyoak.

The number of graduates at San Juan High School will be around 100 at ceremonies set to begin at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 21 in the high school auditorium. Lyle Nielson is the guest speaker. Twelve graduates will receive summa cum laude honors as top graduates of the class.

Whitehorse High School will present diplomas to 33 graduates in the high school gymnasium on Saturday, May 23 beginning at 10 a.m. Leo Platero is the guest speaker. The top graduate is Josha John.

A graduating class of 21 students will receive diplomas from Monument Valley High School beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 22 in the high school gymnasium. Audrey Boone is the featured guest speaker. Elisa Chief is the valedictorian and Melanie Lee is the salutatorian of the graduating class.

Navao Mountain High School will present diplomas to four graduates on Wednesday, May 20 beginning at noon. Orlo Knight is the featured speaker.
