USC journalism students “intern” at SJR

by Bill Boyle
We are excited to announce that a group of students from the University of Southern California (USC) will spend several weeks in San Juan County this spring as “interns” at the San Juan Record.
The group will include undergraduate and graduate students. They will be led by Judy Muller and Rebecca Haggerty, who teach at the USC Annenberg School for Communications and Journalism.
Muller recently retired from the USC Annenberg faculty. She is an Emmy, duPont-Columbia and Peabody Award-winning television correspondent and National Public Radio commentator.
Haggerty is an associate professor at USC. She spent ten years as an Emmy-winning producer for Dateline NBC.
They are leading the group on an experience similar in many ways to a study abroad tour, but instead of heading off to an exotic far away land, they are headed to San Juan County.
On second thought, I guess that San Juan County can be considered exotic and far away to students from an elite school on the West Coast.
The Annenberg School is ranked fifth in the latest US News and World Report rating of journalism schools.
Muller explains, “We are interested in talking to people in a rural area about their hopes, fears, interests, etc. – since clearly that population has been overlooked by much of the media in the past.”
It is anticipated that the students will report on a wide range of issues in San Juan County, including Native American issues, public lands, poverty, and rural economic development. I would guess that Bears Ears may also be discussed.
We plan to publish a special issue featuring the work of the students at the end of their visit.
