County considers special events facility near fairgrounds
San Juan County is considering the construction of a special events facility at the county fairgrounds in Monticello. A consulting firm is in the process of completing a feasibility study of the proposal. Rod Markin, of Markin Consulting, recently met with members of the Monticello Chamber of Commerce as part of the feasibility study.
The facility would be built on 30 acres of ground, immediately north of the fairgrounds, which was purchased by the county in the past year. Still in the planning stages, the project could result in the construction of an indoor arena and more.
Markin explained that the feasibility study will help identify exactly what type of facility could succeed. He said that his firm will explore a full range of options for the project, including an indoor arena that could be used for livestock or motor vehicle events. Other ideas to be considered include exhibition and meeting space, a senior center, and space for banquets or receptions.
The Chamber of Commerce helped outline additional events that could take place in such a facility, including trade shows, business expos, tractor pulls, ATV Safari events, concerts, and horse and rodeo shows. They suggested that the facility be able to handle up to 1,000 visitors.
Markin is involved in a three-month process that will indicate the feasibility of the project. An architectural firm would complete the master planning if the project proceeds to that point.
During the past 18 years, Markin’s firm has completed similar studies in the Durango, Grand Junction and Uintah County areas.
