Commission candidates answer the question, “Why should we vote for you?

I would like to tell the citizens of County Commission District #1 why they should re-elect me to the San Juan County Commission.  I have lived my entire life (less college) in Monticello and San Juan County.  I have invested my heart and soul in this county.  For thirty years I taught school and all six of my children graduated from MHS.  I believe in our public education system and support it 100%.  I accepted extra curricular activities, which required many hours after teaching and almost every Saturday.  I spent time during my spring vacations taking 8th graders from Monticello and Blanding to Catalina Island in California to have a wonderful marine biology experience.  I was dedicated to my job and the students.
I have always been involved in the community.  I worked as the county recreation director in the summers and helped get a fast pitch softball program established.  We were able to get lights for a second field and started a fast pitch softball tournament on the 24th celebration that is still running today.  I worked with other fathers and mothers to expand the Junior Livestock program.  We erected the fine buildings being used at the fair grounds now.  I have supported and participated in the first youth golf program as our golf course was being developed.  I served as a city councilman when the sewer lagoons were expanded and Loyds Lake was built.  I served on the city economic development board as chair.  I established a convenience store (Trailside), and with my wife and family and friends ran it for fifteen years.  I began early in my life to dedicate my all for Monticello and San Juan County because I wanted it to be a great place to live and raise my children.
As a commissioner I have had this same enthusiasm and dedication.  I give it my all.  I attend every meeting that I am assigned to attend.  I have tried to make myself available to receive key appointments that could help San Juan County financially.  I am proud to be a member of the Permanent Community Impact Board, which has made it possible for our county to receive over 30 million dollars in no interest loans and grants for very needed projects.  If I am not re-elected, this appointment will go another county commissioner and not to a San Juan County Commissioner.  I am also the Vice-Chair of the Joint Highway Committee.  This position has helped all of San Juan County by getting projects and money to stay here rather than be spent on the Wasatch front.
I have always tried to position myself to help the County any way I can.  I am not afraid to work hard and give it my all for the citizens of San Juan County. A county commission makes decisions each and every week. As an aggressive county commissioner over the past eight years, I have been involved in thousands of decisions, many of them tough decisions with real consequences. Despite the risks that come from so many decisions by an imperfect Commissioner, I feel very proud of my record of accomplishment. Some never make mistakes because they never try to make life for others any better.  If you don’t try to make life for others any better, you will be safe from errors.  But, I will continue to dedicate myself to the County of San Juan, and I will give the job 100% of my hard work and dedication.
I know it is easy to stand far off and criticize what someone else is doing, but I hope that the citizens will look at the positive things that have happened while I have been a commissioner.  I have developed strategic partnerships that have added matching money to county dollars for needed projects.  For example; the San Juan County Hospital improvements, Monticello Swimming Pool, road work and utility work in Monticello and Blanding, La Sal Senior Center, Fire and Emergency service buildings all over the county, emergency equipment, water development, road work on the reservation, Lisbon Valley Road project, improved fair grounds facility, concession stands at county schools, and we facilitated leasing water rights to Blue Castle Nuclear facility at Green River.  I serve and represent San Juan County at the National, State as well as local level, support VMTE in securing funding for cancer screening, fight for County RS2477 rights to access public lands, and I chair the UAC public lands committee. I have received appointments from Governor Herbert that I have been willing to accept, and I support USA-ALL and our local Spear group for developing ATV access.  
I have always tried to put our tax dollars to work for our residents.  I just think the people deserve more than just taxing them to maintain a large savings account.  Put the money to work.  Several years ago the best use was to make millions in interest from our reserves, but today we can partner with others to complete very needed projects for our citizens.  We need to maintain a reserve for hard times and the last four years are what I would call hard times. The lack of interest has caused the reserves to decline, but by the end of this year, we should have close to $40 million in the reserve fund again.
Again re-elect me and you will get a person who has dedicated his life to this county, which I loves.
