Bucks start slow, but come on strong at tourney

by Anna Thayn

The Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers started off slow this weekend at the Juab Duals Tournament, but came back strong to finish the weekend with a 6-3 record as a team.

The Bucks opened with a nail biter against Juan Diego, and came out just seven points short of a win in the 35-42 heartbreaker.  They picked up wins against Freemont 42-34, and the independent team 45-30, and were defeated by Juab 24-49, to open at 2-2 on day one of the tourney.

The Bucks came back strong in day two, winning against Mountain View 64-11, Altamont 43-28, Skyview 40-34, and Salem Hills 46-28.  They were only beaten by Manti 43-33, but will get another chance at the Templars this weekend at the Manti Duals Tournament.

Rhett Adair led the Bucks, going undefeated at the tournament 7-0.  Adair came out strong for the Bucks, earning wins by fall in each of his first four matches.  Adair put up an exciting 7-4 win against a tough Altamont opponent.  Adair finished with five falls for the weekend.

Adam Martinez also came up big for the Buckaroos, finishing the weekend with an 8-1 record.  Martinez  set the tone early, coming out with a convincing 16-0 technical fall in his first match. He followed it with four falls in a row and three points wins to finish with a fantastic 8-1 record.

David Boyle had an exciting tournament, with a 7-2 record, and takes the award for the most close matches by a Buckaroo this week.  Boyle had two wins by fall and then suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Juab.  He fought back and won five straight, including two victories by two points or less, keeping the fans on the edge of their seats.

Jesse Barton was 6-2 for the tournament. Barton started out in a bit of a slump, losing back to back matches, but came back strong and won his next six by fall.

CJ Cordasco and Colton Musselman each earned five wins.  Cordasco earned his first win of the season against a tough Juan Diego opponent, and was 5-3 in his first weekend of the season.

Musselman was 5-2, earning pins in each win. Chase Randall was 4-3 on the weekend, winning by fall against tough opponents from Freemont, Salem Hills and Juab.

Ricky Wilcox and Reed Steele each picked up three wins.  Wilcox earned all three by fall, and Steele put two in his pin column.

Earning two wins at the tournament were Gabe Beh, Nolan Black, and Ronald “Taz” Robinson.  Beh got the crowd to their feet with an exciting one point victory against Freemont.  Black and Robinson each put two falls in their stat totals.

Tyrel Shupe and Caleb Bailey each came home with one in their win column.

The Bucks travel to the Manti Duals Tournament over the weekend.  On Tuesday, December 23, the first home match of the season is between the Bucks and the Grand County Red Devils.
