Bucks defeat Broncos on diamond

The Monticello Buckaroos scored in every inning but the last on April 14 to record their first baseball victory over the San Juan Broncos in several years, 13-6. 
The Bucks jumped on the Broncos right from the beginning, scoring two runs in the first and five in the second to lead 7-0 and cruised from there. 
Austin Maloy picked up his third win of the year on the mound against just one loss by striking out 14 Broncos in the big Buckaroo win.  He also hit a homerun for the Bucks, along with a double and triple to help his own cause. 
The Bucks pounded out 14 hits against Bronco pitching, including another homerun by Makade Maloy. 
Dillon Maughan doubled twice, Jake Giles doubled and tripled and Drew Baird doubled to complete the hitting parade for the Buckaroos. 
Maloy only allowed the Broncos three hits, including a homer by 2A homerun leader Bronz Eldredge, his fifth and a double by Rye Nielson. 
The win keeps the Bucks in third place in Region 15 at 7-4, behind 9-2 Emery and 8-2 Grand.
The Bucks traveled to Farmington, NM to play on Friday, picking up a 4-3 win in extra innings.  The teams ended regulation play tied at 2-2 and went four extra innings. 
Both teams scored one run in the ninth before Monticello got the game winner in the 11th, and Drew Baird shut down Farmington in the bottom of the 11th. 
The Buckaroos stand 10-6 overall on the season with one last home game against Grand on Tuesday before entering the 2A state playoffs. 
Much could change before the playoffs begin on May 3, but at this point it looks like the Bucks could play in Manti at 9 a.m. against either Parowan, Millard, or Delta.
Softball
At 6-0 and 11-6, the San Juan Lady Broncos sit atop the 2A rankings, in a familiar spot. 
Tatiana Sue Sue and Kellie Palmer rest in second in 2A in homeruns with four each.  Palmer is also in second in doubles with nine.  Jessica Swenson has eight and Sue Sue, seven.
Stats
Several Bucks and Broncos are showing up among the 2A leaders in baseball. 
Bronz Eldredge from San Juan, as mentioned, is the 2A leader in homeruns with four.  Eldredge is also second in triples with four and has belted out four doubles on the year also, in just his first year in varsity baseball. 
The Bucks’ Austin Maloy is second in homeruns with four and has two triples and eight doubles. 
Austin Wilcox has two homeruns for MHS.  Tanner Taylor has three triples for coach Charlie Taylor’s Broncos, while Rye Nielson has eight doubles. 
Shane Christensen has legged out two triples for the Bucks, as has Hunter Bowring for coach Bryan Bowring’s Buckaroos.  Christensen has also pounded out five doubles. 
Makade Maloy has six doubles on the season, while Bronco Chase Richmond has four.
Trackenfield
San Juan and Monticello track teams participated in the Darrell Gardner Invitational at Emery High School last week. 
San Juan boys, paced by two wins by Max Morley (400 and 200) and two seconds by Brittain Bowring (high jump, long jump), captured second place in the team results behind Richfield. 
Two relay teams, the 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 teams, also took second place. 
Morley (100), Javen Ivins (longjump), and Mike Monson (shotput) gathered third place medals.  Cole Chamberlain and Braden Meyer were fourth in the 3200 and 1600 respectively. 
Monticello boys had two boys place, Easton Nielson, who stepped over from baseball to place second in the 3200, and Brian Tanner, who was fourth in the high jump. 
Arianna Reay was the only girl first place winner, winning the long jump as the MHS girls were seventh. 
Molly Anderson and Makayla Leiataua both were second in their events, the 1600 and discus.  Leiataua also placed fifth in shot put as did Kendall Harris in the 3200. 
San Juan girls had two finishers, Sara Morley, who was second in the shot put, and Lynella Benn, who was fifth in the 1600.
Golf
In golf action, Tanner Eardley still is the number one golfer in Region 19 after shooting a fine 67. 
Jens Brewer continues to hold down the number three spot in the region.
Birding
Two more birds to add to the growing total, up to 116 now. 
Mixed with western meadowlarks in the open country that surrounds Monticello are horned larks.  Horned larks are small songbirds and are the only true lark that is native to North America. 
They are identified by black chest and face patches, a yellow throat and small feather horns on the head. 
The second bird is the American avocet, a striking shore bird with long legs, a long upturned bill, black and white wings and body with a rusty colored neck and head. 
Eight of ‘em were sighted at a pond east of town.  It’s quite a striking bird to be seen in our little part of the world.
