Bucks bring home two trophies

SPORTS SHORTS
Monticello High School ended the year with a bang on May 19 as both the boys and girls track teams competed their way to the second place trophies in the state track and field meet, held at Brigham Young University.
The boys actually tied for second with Rich with 77 points, trailing Duchesne, who was first with 121 points.  Led by the hurdling duo of Jake Duncan and Lance Allen, who placed first and second in both the 110 hurdles and 300 hurdles, the boys finished in second place for the second year in a row.
The pair were clearly the class of 1A hurdles as they finished nearly a second ahead of the third place finisher in the 110h and a half second ahead in the 300m.  A second is almost 10 yards!
Duncan, a junior, repeats his 110h championship from last year. The future also looks bright for Allen, who is just a sophomore. It was a prodigious day for Duncan, who, in addition to his two state championships, finished fourth in the high jump and in the javelin.
Austin Maloy, another sophomore, added to the Buck point total when he finished second in the high jump with a leap of 5’9”. Junior Zach Johnson hurled the discus far enough for third place.
Other boys part of the boy point total are PJ Leiataua, who put the shot for fifth; Justin Wright, who was sixth in the 800m; and Gunnar Hollingsworth, who was eighth in discus.
Boys relay teams also scored points, sixth in the 4x400, seventh in the 4x100, and fifth in the medley relay.
It was hurdling, jumping and the javelin that brought the highest placings for the girls from MHS, as they continued their consistent state track showings of the past few years to score 80 points to first place Rich’s 117.
Last year the girls were third, and they were fourth in 2010, third in 2009, and second in 2008.
Kaitlyn Clark, a junior, raced her way to second in the 100 hurdles (she was also fifth in the 300h), Robin Randall, a senior, placed second in the javelin and sophomore Arianna Reay finished second in both the high jump and long jumps.  Reay added a third place finish in the 100m.
Freshman Bailey Goodwine finished third in the 3200m and fifth in the 1600m, while Martha Beh was sixth in the 400m, Shania DeAnda sixth in the 200m and Nancy Johnson seventh in the 200m.
The 4x100 relay team, consisting of DeAnda, Johnson, Clark, Reay, and Beh, were state champions, finishing over a second ahead of second place!
The 4x400 relay team was second, with Johnson, Beh, Zoe Chadwick, and Cambria Welch passing the baton flawlessly. The medley team scored points with a sixth place finish.
The only state championship for San Juan was the expected title by Ammon Mitchell in the 110 hurdles.  Mitchell didn’t disappoint as he raced to the title in 14.87 seconds, short of the state 2A record of 14.74 but the fifth best time in the entire state this year.
The Bronco boys finished 11th overall, with Jade Grover placing sixth in the 3200m and seventh in the 1600 and Max Morley, a freshman, placing fifth in the 400m.
San Juan girls, who finished fourth, are paced by Samantha Giddings’ second place put in the shot.  Lindsey Christensen was fourth in the javelin, as was Cortney Macdonald in the 100 hurdles (she was also seventh in the 300h).
Sade Kyles finished her fine Bronco track career with a fifth in the 200m and eighth in the 100m.  She was also a member the second place 4x100 relay team along with Macdonald, Delaney Nielson, Simone Shumway, Kelli Meyer and Talia Kyles.
Meyer placed two more times, fifth in the 400m and seventh in the 800m. The Lady Bronco 4x400 relay team was fourth.
Golf
Buckaroo golf coach Ben Crane files this report on the Buckaroo boys golf team.
“The boys high school golf season has come to a close. It was a lot of fun, especially since the boys worked so hard on improving their game!
“Twelve teams and 90 total golfers participated in the 1A Boys State Championship. We ended up placing third overall, edging out Rich by four strokes after an amazing second day effort.
“After day one, we trailed Rich by 11 strokes. The team refocused their efforts Monday night with some creative miniature golf practice and came out Tuesday morning with a whole new attitude.
“Tanner Eardley led the team, as he has done most of the year, with a solid performance. Tanner held his own while playing against a nationally ranked opponent with a day one 83 and a day two 84. Eardley had a two day total of 167 and ranked sixth overall individually.
“Jonah Cafferty continued to pull through for the team when they needed him most with a day one 89 and a team best 81 on day two. Cafferty earned a two day total of 170 and placed seventh overall individually. Cafferty also placed first in the Region 19 Championship this year with an 81 and is the Region Medalist.
“Chase Doucett was our dependable anchorman for the tournament with consistent 88’s both days. His two day total of 176 put him in 11th place overall.
The most surprising effort came from freshman Jens Brewer, who after a nerve racking first day score of 101, came back on day two and played the game of his life shooting an 89 (12 strokes better than his season average) which solidified the third place position for us.
“We wouldn’t have been successful without our other two seniors, Adam Black and Derek Ramsay. Black was our number four man for most of the season, making it possible for us to qualify for the state championship. He worked hard to lower his average more than 20 strokes by the state championship.
“This was Ramsay’s first high school golf season and he did very well. His good humor and great attitude helped the team stay loose and perform their best at state. The team would also like to thank Conager Wells and Sean Killary for being a part of us this year.”
In girls golf, Buckaroos Swayzi Slade and Jaimie Keyes finished 20th and 21st in the state tournament, scoring 110 and 111, respectively.  Jesse Ivins, of San Juan High, shot 120.
On to summer baseball!
