Bernie Christensen is Monticello Citizen of Year

Bernie Christensen, a long time resident of Monticello, is the 2013 Citizen of the Year. The award is presented each year by the City of Monticello.
Christensen was recognized and honored for her years of service to the community at the Monticello High School holiday music concert on December 17.
Community members seemed pleased with the announcement of Christensen as the Citizen of the Year.
“Bernie has been an important part of Monticello for years,” said one community member. “Its about time she was honored.”
Bernie Christensen became part of the Monticello community more than 40 years ago, when she married Rex Christensen on July 31, 1970. They have six daughters, 18 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
Bernie was not only busy at home raising a family, but she has been involved in community and religious issues.
She served on the Monticello City Council for ten years, starting in January of 1986 and serving through December of 1997. She is still very passionate about city issues. She also served on the board for San Juan Counseling for several years.
Bernie is currently working at the San Juan Hospital, where she always provides a welcoming smile to all who enter the door. Besides the years spent at the hospital, she also spent several years working at Monticello Home and Auto Supply (Napa), Blue Mountain Foods, and Kent’s Foods.
Bernie is a member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Monticello. Through the church, Bernie and her great friend, Jeri, spend their Friday evenings at the San Juan County Jail, where they play their guitars and sing with the inmates, while also providing a message of hope and inspiration.
Bernie is always there to help anyone in need if she possibly can, whether it is by cooking a dinner of Mexican food to raise money for a friend in need, singing at a funeral or celebration, or offering her debit card to someone in need of money.
There are countless other examples of Bernie’s kindness and generosity. City officials say that they are honored to name Bernie Christensen as the 2013 Citizen of the Year.
