Basketball tourneys start
State basketball tournaments begin this week for many local teams. The playoff picture is not yet finalized for the San Juan Broncos, who will have a play-in game on Saturday at Southern Utah University in Cedar City. They just don’t yet know who they will play.
The Broncos host Gunnison on Tuesday to make up a snow-cancelled game in January. If they win, San Juan finishes the regular season in a four-way tie for second in the region. A coin flip will determine the final seeding.
The Broncos finish fourth if they lose and face 13-8 South Summit at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The 8-12 Lady Broncos play 11-8 Kanab in a 9 a.m. play-in game on Friday at SUU. The Broncos were third in the region.
The Monticello and Whitehorse girls teams finished the regular season tied for first in Region 19. A coin flip resulted in the Buckaroos earning the top seed in the region for the state tournament.
Monticello plays the winner of a Tintic/Altamont game at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 17 at the Sevier Valley Events Center in Richfield.
The Lady Raiders open the tournament at 8:30 p.m. against the winner of Milford/Wendover.
The Monument Valley Cougars have a play-in game against Bryce Valley. If they win, they face Meridian at 11:30 a.m.
