Running for: Blanding Mayor

Several people have asked me why I would want to run for Mayor. This question has caused me to ponder why people run for public office. I am sure there are many different reasons: fame, power, control, money, hidden agendas, etc. Although I don’t think any of the candidates in Blanding are running for these reasons, I am not too sure sometimes of the candidates that represent us on the State and National levels. Having said that, I am certain why I am running for Mayor and so let me answer that question.

I came to Blanding for the first time 52 years ago. When I arrived it became apparent to me, and I am sure to the people of Blanding, that I was different in my dress, attitude and behavior from the vast majority of the townspeople due, for the most part, to the prominent religion in the area of which I was not a member. I also initially felt isolated because I wasn’t from one of the prominent families that came through the Hole-in-the-Rock or up from Mexico. Almost instantly, however, these people quickly took me in as one of their own. They seemed to do all they could to make me feel welcomed.

I quickly became impressed with the great people of the town. I found it remarkable the love and passion these people have for Blanding.

This town and these people have changed my life forever. It has changed the lives of my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. I love this town. It is my home. I love its history, its culture and its acceptance of newcomers. I want and need to give something back.

Running for Mayor is the best way I can give back. Most of you that know me, know I am probably not the most gifted public speaker, or the fastest reader and I never learned to write properly. But I am a good businessman. Mostly because I work hard, never give up and lead by example.

I want people to get involved and be passionate about the success of this great town. As that happens, certainly we will have different opinions on important issues. We need to work together with all of our different opinions and through synergy arrive at the best answer. Please vote Jim Slavens for Mayor!
