The San Juan Broncos notched another Region 15 win last Friday night, February 5 in Blanding.
The win over the Grand County Red Devils improved the Broncos region record to 7-1, good enough to remain in a tie for first place with the Emery Spartans.
After jumping out to a big lead in the first quarter, San Juan cruised to the 21-point victory, 79-58.
In the first quarter, the Bronco offense got going early, outscoring the Red Devils by nine points, 19-10. San Juan would build on that lead in the second quarter, as they exploded for 27 points in the period while giving up 16 points to establish a 46-26 halftime lead.
Grand chipped into the San Juan lead a bit in the third quarter, cutting it by two points to trial by 18 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
The Broncos sealed the deal in the fourth, adding 16 points to their total while only giving up 13 on their way to a 79-58 win.
Jaden Torgerson led San Juan with 21 points and seven rebounds. Jordan Blake netted 19 points while pulling down seven boards and snatching three steals.
Caleb Pugh scored 15 points to go with nine rebounds, and Bronz Eldredge scored six points while pulling down 10 rebounds to lead the Broncos in that category.
Max Slavens also scored six points and dished out seven assists. Zach Brown added four points, while Mason Bethea had three points.
Keaton Hiatt and Aaron Mitchell each chipped in two points, and Jaxon Lee rounded things out with one point on the night.
Earlier in the week, the Broncos lost a non-region win to Monticello, 67-49. The game was close throughout the competition, but the Bucks were able to pull away late when the Broncos were forced to foul in an attempt to get back into the game.
Instead, Monticello put the game away at the free throw line, shooting 80 percent from the charity stripe. The win marks the first time in over 10 years the Bucks defeated the Broncos in Monticello.
The Broncos will wrap up their regular season schedule on Friday, February 12 in Castle Dale, UT against the Emery Spartans. The game is slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
The Lady Broncos picked up a huge road win over the Grand County Red Devils on February 4. The win moves the Broncos into a two way tie for third place in Region 15 with Manti and all but guarantees San Juan a playoff berth.
San Juan took control of the game in the first quarter, outscoring the Red Devils 11-7. The Broncos then doubled up their point total, scoring another 11 points in the second quarter. Grand answered with nine points of their own to trail by six points at the half, 22-16.
The Red Devils battled back in the third quarter, getting the better of their guests, 11-8 in the quarter, making the score 30-27 heading into the fourth and final quarter. San Juan responded to Grand’s third quarter rally by again outscoring the Red Devils 11-10 to lock up the win, 41-37.
Tyla Morris paced San Juan with a game high 15 points, including three three-pointers. Mary Royer also hit the double digit mark with 14 points.
Krista Grover scored four points, KrysTelle Noyse had three, while Sharla Yanito and Lakesia Lopez each had two points and Megan Grover finished with one point in the win.
The Broncos will host the Emery Spartans on Thursday, February 11 before turning around and welcoming the North Sevier Wolves on Friday, February 12. Both games are set to begin at 7 p.m.
The San Juan High wrestling team competed at Region this past week. Three Broncos placed in their respective weight classes and got their cards punched for next week’s State Tournament.
They are Reilly Myrick, second place at 182 lbs; Coleman Black, sixth place at 170 lbs; and Sammy Warren, sixth place at 106 lbs.
