THE ROUND-UP
by Tad Barton

The San Juan girls basketball team spent the weekend playing in the Jerry Richardson Memorial Tournament in Shiprock, NM.

The Broncos played three games, picking up a win in the first against Red Mesa, AZ, 48-42, before dropping game two to the host team Shiprock, NM, 68-19 and their third and final game to West Las Vegas, NM, 58-21.

In their first game against Red Mesa, San Juan jumped out to an early 20-14 lead after their first quarter. The Broncos were able to build on that lead in the second quarter as they outscored their opponent 9-8 in the period to claim a 29-22 lead at the half.

Red Mesa battled back in the third quarter, cutting the San Juan lead to just four points, 35-31, heading into the final eight minutes. San Juan sealed the deal in the fourth, scoring 13 points while holding Red Mesa to just nine points to pick up the win, 48-42.

In the win, the Broncos were paced by Tyla Morris who finished with 12 points, just one ahead of teammate Krista Grover who scored 11 points in the game. KrysTelle Noyse added nine points, while Mary Royer chipped in eight. Megan Grover and Lakesia Lopez each contributed four points and Sharla Yanito and Bodell Nielson rounded things out with one point each.

On day two of the tournament, the Broncos faced off against the host team, the Shiprock Lady Chieftains. San Juan struggled to keep pace with the high scoring Lady Chieftains as Shiprock cruised to a 68-19 victory.

Not a single Bronco managed to hit the double-digit mark in scoring, as they were again led by Morris who was held to six points in the game.

Noyse scored four points and pulled down five boards, Yanito tallied three points while Krista and Megan Grover each scored two points. Krista also had a pair of blocked shots. Lopez scored one point in the loss.

Day three pitted the Lady Broncos against the West Las Vegas, NM Dons. San Juan again struggled to score, never hitting double digit totals in any quarter and managing just 21 points total for the game.

The Dons on the other hand had little to no trouble putting the ball through the hoop as they poured in 54 points in the win.

The Dons jumped out to a big 19-8 first quarter lead. San Juan was able to hold West Las Vegas to just nine points in the second quarter, but were only able to score six themselves, so they headed into the intermission down 28-14.

In the third quarter, it was again the Dons doing most of the scoring building their lead to 25 points, 44-19 heading into the fourth. The Broncos managed just two points in the final period, giving up 10 points to West Las Vegas, and the Broncos again finished on the wrong side of a lopsided score, 54-21.

Yanito led all Bronco scorers in this game with eight points. Morris and Noyse each finished with four points, while Morris added two assists and one steals and Noyse secured five rebounds.

Krista Grover and Chamique Lopez each scored two points. Grover once again had two blocked shots, and Lopez hauled in 10 rebounds. Wrapping up the scoring for the Broncos was Lekesia Lopez who finished with one point in the game, and Nielson had two steals.

In addition to placing fourth at the tournament, Morris and Krista Grover were both named to the All-Tournament team.

Boys’ Basketball
The San Juan boys’ basketball team had just one game this past week, as they traveled to Green River, UT to take on the Green River Pirates. The Broncos took control of the game early and never looked back as they picked up their second win of the season, 66-44.

San Juan had a big first quarter outscoring Green River by eight points, 19-7. The Broncos built on their lead in the second quarter doubling up the Pirates 26-13 to give themselves a comfortable 45-20 lead at the half.

Green River would manage to outscore their guests in both the third quarter, 11-10 and in the fourth, 13-11, but it was just not enough to overcome the Broncos’ big first half, as San Juan cruised to the victory, 66-44.

Jayden Torgerson led the Broncos with 20 points, including two three-pointers. Max Slavens also made two three’s on his way to scoring 15 points.

Caleb Pugh scored nine points, while Bronz Eldredge and Zach Brown each chipped in five. Keaton Hiatt added four points, Ethan Pugh hit one basket from beyond the arc to finish with three points and Jaxon Lee and Dylan Ivins each had two.
