The San Juan Broncos’ baseball team sent their two seniors out with a win on Monday, April 28, topping the Piedra Vista Panthers 11-10.
With two outs and Bronz Eldredge on third, the Panthers intentionally walked Easton Lee and Chase Richmond to load up the bases.
Jordan Blake, who had struggled at the plate, stepped into the batter’s box and ripped a walk off single to right field, scoring Eldredge and giving the Broncos the win.
Rye Nielson picked up the win on the mound as he went the distance. He surrendered eight hits and three walks while logging two strike outs.
Eldredge led San Juan at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two RBIs and scoring four runs. Nielson also had three hits and crossed the plate four times in the game.
The 2014 season didn’t pan out as well as most would have liked, but Coach Charlie Taylor’s squad stuck together and improved every week right up to their final game. Thanks for the great season and the memories.
The San Juan boys and girls track teams were in action this week at the BYU Invitational in Provo, UT. The Boys placed third in the 1A/2A Division scoring 65.5 points.
They were just off the pace of the first and second place teams of Grand County and Kanab, who scored 68 and 66 points respectively.
Individuals placing for the boys include Max Morley, fourth in the 100 meters, second in the 200 meters and second in the 400 meters.
Brendan Pugh, sixth in the 110 meter hurdles. Christian Sherrow, eigth in the 800 meters. Brittain Bowring, third high jump and long jump.
Brayden Giddings, fourth place in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Mikell Monson, fifth place, shot put.
The 4x100 team of Hunter Latham, Payton Palmer, Brittain Bowring and Nathan Nielson placed fifth while the 4x400 team of Javen Ivins, Sterling Black, Isaiah Warren and Christian Sherrow finished third.
Finally, the Medley Relay team of Nathan Nielson, Payton Palmer, Isaiah Warren and Christian Sherrow took first.
In spite of some great efforts and performances by the girls’ team, Sarah Morley was the only Bronco to place, taking third in the shot put.
The 2A State Track and Field Championships will be held at BYU and are scheduled to begin Friday, May 16. Good luck to the Broncos!
The Bronco boys tennis team competed this past weekend in the Region 15 Tournament in Moab. San Juan managed to qualify four teams for next week’s 2A State Tournament.
Second singles William Heck placed third, third singles Carter Holliday took second while the first doubles team of Kesian Barton and Kade Palmer claimed 4th place and the second doubles team of Lincoln Holliday and Ashton Jones placed third.
The 2A State Tournament will be this Saturday, May 10 at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City.
The San Juan Softball team had a busy and successful week as they finished out their Region 15 schedule by defeating Grand County, 9-2. Tatiana Su’eSu’e picked up the win giving up two runs on five hits while notching 11 strikeouts.
Offensively Kellie Palmer and Jessica Swenson combined for six hits with Palmer driving in 5 RBIs.
San Juan wrapped their week up playing the Swing for Life Tournament where they went 4-3.
The Lady Broncos picked up wins against Kearns (9-1), Hillcrest (8-4), West (1-0) and Juab (8-2). Even in their three losses San Juan competed well, dropping two one run contests to Bingham (4-3) and Murray (8-7). San Juan’s third loss came against Pleasant Grove (6-4).
The Broncos got solid outings from Su’eSu’e and J. Swenson throughout the tournament, with both pitchers recording wins. At the plate San Juan was consistent with many different batters contributing at times.
The UHSAA 2A State Softball Tournament is Thursday through Saturday. The Broncos open against Parowan at noon on Thursday.
