Wilcox was presented with the honor at the Monticello High School Christmas Music program on December 16.
Wilcox was honored for his extensive commitment to the youth of Monticello. He has been heavily involved in a host of youth sports programs, with particular emphasis on the wrestling and football programs.
In a letter nominating Wilcox for the award, Monticello City Councilman Tim Young writes, “Over the past 10 years, I dare say that no other individual has put in more volunteer hours with the youth of our community.
“He has headed up the Rowdy Boys Wrestling program in Monticello for many years, which has brought thousands of people to town and has been a great boost to local businesses.
“In addition to running the youth wrestling program, he has been heavily involved in youth football and High School football.
“Because of his dedication to the youth of Monticello and his belief that character can be shaped through sports, he has had a great influence on the many kids and adults with whom he works.
“Coaching youth programs is often a thankless job requiring an enormous amount of time and effort, but R.L. has continued doing it year after year.
“I believe that his love for kids and his dedication to them is something that has made Monticello a great place to be a kid.
“In my experience, there are not many parents who step up to the plate and put in effort trying to help every kid they can, but R.L. is one of those individuals that shows each kid he works with that he cares.
“Because of this, he has been able to help our youth become the best they can be. I feel that it is time that Coach R.L. is recognized by the citizens for the great contribution he has made to our kids.”
