Perkins recently graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA with a master’s degree in theology. He is originally from Georgia and spent recent years in North Carolina. Despite living most of his life in the eastern United States, Perkins was anxious to take the position in Monticello.
“My wife, Yvonne, spent several years in Farmington, NM and loves the area,” said Perkins. “We look forward to spending many years here.”
The Perkins family includes five children, with one more on the way. They include Rylan (age 14), Nolan (12), Gideon (8), Layla (5) and Lincoln (3).
Perkins worked as a restaurant manager before entering the fulltime ministry. This will be his first assignment since graduating this summer.
Perkins said his goals are to help the church and community grow. “We want to reflect the love of Christ in the community,” explains Perkins. “We want to help keep this town a great place to raise a family.”
Perkins listed a number of programs that are offered by the church to help meet those goals. They include a recent Family Film Night, a Men’s Fellowship Breakfast planned for Saturday, October 27 from 7 to 10 a.m., and a Lady’s Book Study each Monday from 6 to 7 p.m. The book study will feature Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.
Bob McLeroy originally started the First Baptist Church in Monticello in 1956. John Williams led the congregation for the past two decades.
Each Sunday, the First Baptist Church offers Sunday School at 9:45 a.m., an 11 a.m. Morning Worship Service and a 5 p.m. Evening Worship Service.
Weekday events include Bible Study and Prayer each Wednesday at 7 p.m. and Youth Group each Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
The church owns KAAJ-LP 103.9 FM, a radio station that broadcasts a mix of religious teaching programs, syndicated music programs and talk shows. In addition, the radio station broadcasts Monticello High School sporting events and Monticello City Council meetings.
The church is located at 116 East 500 North in Monticello. The telephone number is 435-587-2534.
