The Monticello Buckaroo wrestlers closed out the regular season with a Grand win, 57-23 over the Moab Red Devils. Buckaroo fans started the night by celebrating four senior wrestlers; Tim Ryan, Kelland Brewer, Jake Miller and Clayton Dee.

Also honored was former Buckaroo Aaron Butler, the only four-time state champion at Monticello High School. A banner was displayed that will be hung in the wrestling room honoring Butler. The Monticello Jr. High Wrestling team was also recognized for their individual placings and third place team finish at the state tournament.

In JV matches, Curtis Baird and Russell Musselman each earned wins by fall to set the tone.

When the varsity wrestling got started, the Buckaroos were on fire, dominating the Devils throughout the night. Justin Redd, Brian Robinson, Cole Eldredge, Eric Anderson, Austin Wilcox, PJ Leiataua all jumped out to early leads and earned wins by fall in the first period.

Tim Ryan and Hunter Bowring weren’t far behind, dominating their matches on the way to second period pins. Brandon Musselman put on a show for the fans in an exciting 6-2 win. Kelland Brewer, Jake Giles and Chance Weahkee all worked hard but fell short, losing to their Red Devil opponents. Clayton Dee lost in a tough exhibition match up.

Closing out the night for the Bucks is new recruit and exchange student Vincent Dalhoff, who wrestled his first match and earned a fall in the first period.

Earlier in the week the Bucks travelled to Dove Creek where they had some great matches, but fell to the Bulldogs 36-48. It was a tough night of wrestling with Brian Robinson, Cole Eldredge, Tim Ryan and Nephi Barlow each coming out on top and earning wins for the Bucks by fall. Coming home with a loss are Justin Redd, Chandler Draper, Russell Musselman, Kelland Brewer, Eric Anderson, Jake Giles and Clayton Dee.

The Buckaroos head into the South Division (region) Tournament this weekend on Saturday at Monticello High School with action beginning at 9:30 a.m. Matches running consecutively throughout the day.

This is the first time the Buckaroos have hosted the tournament since 2003. Ten teams will fight for the divisional title. The Buckaroos have won the tournament for the past five years and are preparing to make it six on their home mat.

Tournament organizers have spent hours preparing for a great tournament and encourage the community to come out for a great day of wrestling and support their Buckaroo team.
