The Monticello Buckaroo football team earned their first win of the young season with a convincing 34-13 victory over the Grand Red Devils in Moab.

The August 26 win marks the first Buckaroo victory over the Red Devils in six years.

The Bucks broke open a close first quarter and dominated in the final three quarters to earn the win.

Monticello scored on the first play from scrimmage when quarterback Brian Robinson hit Austin Maloy with an 80-yard pass and run. The two-point conversion was good when Robinson completed a pass to Dillon Maughan for an 8-0 lead.

Grand answered by taking the subsequent kickoff and marching down the field in a sustained drive. When the Devils punched it in, the score was 8-6 for Monticello.

Maughan returned the kickoff all the way to the Devil 13 yard line to put the Bucks in scoring position. Austin Wilcox punched it in from four yards and the scored was 15-6 with just five minutes off the clock.

Grand wasn’t done, scoring again to make the scoring 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Buckaroos took over from there, turning big plays into touchdowns and keeping Grand out of the end zone for the rest of the game.

The next Monticello score came early in the second quarter, when Wilcox scored from one yard out. The key play in the scoring drive was a pass from Robinson to Terek Esplin on third and 10.

The Buckaroo defense played a strong game, bending but not breaking. Wilcox recovered a Devil fumble, Maughan recovered a fumbled punt, and the Buckaroo defense had a big stop on fourth and four in the third quarter.

Monticello scored on an 18-yard pass from Robinson to Jonah Cafferty to make it 28-13.

In the fourth quarter, Wilcox burst through the Devil defense on fourth and one for a 27-yard touchdown run.

The Buckaroo offense ate up more than six minutes on the clock in the fourth quarter, driving deep into Devil territory before fumbling the ball inside the Devil ten. The final score was 34-13.

The Buckaroos relied on the senior leadership of Cafferty, Esplin, Wyatt Holyoak, Tim Ryan, Ford Welch, newcomer Jake Miller and Adam Black.

Monticello opened the season against 3A Carbon. With the win over 2A Grand, the remainder of the Buckaroo schedule is against fellow 1A rivals.

The Bucks host the Layton Christian Eagles on September 2 in the first home game of the year. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
