August 10, 1946 ~ June 5, 2013 Carolyn Kay Palmer Smith passed away at her home in Blanding, UT on June 5, 2013 as the result of a heart attack. She was 66-years-old. She was born in Moab, UT August 10, 1946 to Joseph Martin Palmer and Hilda Grace Rose Palmer. Carolyn lived in Blanding, Moab, and Monticello as a child. She graduated from San Juan High School in Blanding and then attended a cosmetology school in Salt Lake City, UT. Carolyn met and married Frank Smith of Syracuse, NY. They were later divorced. She decided to further her education and went to Price, UT and obtained a nursing degree at the College of Eastern Utah. Carolyn joined the military, the Army and was an Army nurse for many years. She was stationed and lived with her two children in several different locations throughout the world. She moved back to Blanding, “home”, in 2011. She loved the wide-open spaces of this part of the country. She liked jeeping, hiking, four-wheeling, fishing, horseback riding, and doing crafts. She liked Native American art. The most important thing in Carolyn’s life was her family. She is survived by daughter Tiffany Presley; son Frank J. Smith; six grandchildren: Brittany, Joseph, Cody, Andrew, Amanda, and Heather; three great-grandchildren; sisters Joan (Clive) Burgess of St. George, UT, Lola Oliver of Moab, UT, and Edna Rogers of Monticello; sister-in-law, Clyda Palmer; and many nieces and nephews. Carolyn is preceded in death by her mother and father and her only brother, LaVan Palmer. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She will be greatly missed. A graveside service was held, along with interment, at the Blanding Cemetery. Blanding National Guard conducted military honors. Card of thanks

January 6, 1931 ~ June 6, 2013 Peter James Henderson was born January 6, 1931 in Riverton, New Zealand. Pete attended high school until he was 15 when he decided to go to work. Pete was a truck driver, taxi cab driver, dance band musician, a seaman and also served for one year in the New Zealand Air Force. In 1953, he became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a labor missionary at the Church College in Hamilton, New Zealand. Some of Peter’s proudest accomplishments were his six years of teaching music appreciation to the Maori population. He was a devout, dedicated and involved member throughout his life with duties including Branch Presidency, High Council, and working in the temple. He was school administrator in San Juan County for 33 years, where he worked with the Indian culture. In 1957, he entered the United States and enrolled at Brigham Young University. There he earned a bachelor’s degree in music. Later in life he would return to earn a master’s in music, plus a degree as an education specialist. Peter thought music was God’s special gift to man and always tried to bring an appreciation of music to others. In 1961, Peter married Linda Rae Lund. They are parents to five children: Scott, Todd (Callie), Karamea (Richard), Brett (Kellie) and Ann Marie (Craig). In 1980, he married Melissa Keele. They were united until her death in 2007. In April, 2009, he and Maxine were wed. Although their time together was short, it was sweet. He introduced Maxine to his native New Zealand and extended family in Australia. They also enjoyed travel and cruises together. Both were active and participated in church activities. He was an Adjunct Teacher at the College of Eastern Utah. He was also active with the San Juan chorus for 10 years. He wrote five original musicals, also conducted Handel’s Messiah for 23 years in Blanding. He was passionate and positive in his faith as he held many positions throughout his life for the Church. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Avis. Funeral services are Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the Little Valley LDS Chapel located at 2079 East 2450 South, St. George, UT. A visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services at the chapel. Interment will follow at the Tonaquint Cemetery.
