Trevan Holiday, a 220 pound wrestler from Monument Valley High School, won two matches at the 1A state wrestling tournament, with both wins by fall. Holiday was the only wrestler from Monument Valley.
Six Raiders at tournament
With a third place finish at 195 pounds, Brandon Lansing led the Whitehorse Raider wrestling team at the 1A State wrestling tournament. Lansing lost in the first round to the top seed in the weight, which dropped him into the long road of the consolation bracket. He won three in a row, including a rematch against the top seed in the consolation final. A head throw and pin earned Lansing the third place medal.
Sean Yazzie earned a win at 138 pounds, while Paulando Dennison and Dylan Lansing each earned wrestle-in wins in the first round of the tournament.
Other Raiders who wrestled at the tournament are Sheldon Saltclah and Michael Keith.
The Raiders earned 22 points and tied for tenth in the team standings.
Two Broncos earn spot on wrestling medal stand
Two San Juan Bronco wrestlers earned a spot on the podium at the 2A state wrestling tournament on February 14 and 15.
With a 5-1 record at the tournament, Chase Richmond led the way with a third place finish at 220 pounds. Early in the tournament, Richmond lost a close second round match to send him to the consolation bracket. He rolled up four victories in a row, including a pin over the top seed and a sudden death win in the final match.
The other Bronco earning a spot on the podium is Jens Grove, who was fourth at 160 pounds. Grover earned two pins in preliminary rounds to earn a spot in the semifinal match. He fought hard but was pinned in the final seconds.
In the consolation bracket, Grover advanced to the consolation final, where he lost a close 10-8 decision.
Three Broncos each earned two wins at the state tournament. They were defeated just short of earning medals. Dominick Perkins won two matches by fall at 120 pounds, Spencer Beck won two at 152 pounds, and Sterling Black won two at 170 pounds.
Also wrestling for the Broncos are Isaiah Warren at 113 pounds, and Coleman Black at 152 pounds.
The Broncos scored 53 teams points and finished 11th in team standings.
