Whitehorse High educator named Teacher of the Year

Matt Baldwin, a language arts teacher at Whitehorse High School, is the 2014 Teacher of the Year for the San Juan School District.

Baldwin was presented the honor at a March 3 banquet sponsored by the San Juan School District Education Foundation.

Baldwin has taught at the school for the past 15 years. A popular teacher, basketball coach and track coach, he was clearly delighted to be honored.

“I love what I do, and I love the kids at Whitehorse,” said Baldwin.

According to Whitehorse Principal John Fahey, “Mr. Baldwin is a key and critical member of the Montezuma Creek community.

“He is a high-energy Language Arts teacher who is able to engage all his students and bring them to the highest level of performance.

“He builds positive relationships with the students so that they love to learn.

“Matt brings energy to the basketball court and has mentored many students so that they learn about life and the rewards of hard work.

“He is a shining example of what all teachers should aspire to be, in and out of the classroom.

“He brings great credit to the school and to the profession of education.”

Baldwin is one of a number of teachers and educators in the San Juan School District who were honored for their efforts. Schools named a teacher of the year and a classified employee of the year.

The evening included an address by Nedra Bunker, the 2013 teacher of the year from Monticello Elementary School.

While Baldwin is the teacher of the year at Whitehorse High, the classified employee of the year is custodian Alvin Lee.

Connie Todachinnie is the teacher of the year at Montezuma Creek Elementary, while science aide Kimberlee Dee is the classified employee of the year.

In Bluff, the teacher of the year is Robin Cantrell and the classified employee of the year is after-school coordinator Malyssa Egge.

In Monument Valley, Arlinda Singer is the teacher of the year at the elementary school, while interventionist JoLynne Tsosie is the classified employee of the year.

Jeremy Johnson is the teacher of the year at Monument Valley High School, while Riva Sheppard is the classified employee of the year.

In Blanding, the teacher of the year at the elementary school is Lee Ann Parker and the classified employee of the year is custodian Brian Bilboa.

Justin Moon is the teacher of the year at ARL Middle School, and custodian Dixie Nez is the classified employee of the year.

The teacher of the year at San Juan High is Tracy Johnson and the classified employee of the year is LeeAnn Bowring.

In Monticello, the teacher of the year at the elementary school is Laurie Randall and the classified employee of the year is special ed paraprofessional Becca Wikle.

Josh Keyes is the teacher of the year at Monticello High School, while cafeteria worker Loretta Thiery is the classified employee of the year.
