The memorial is a project of the City of Blanding. Appropriately, it is set to be dedicated on Memorial Day in May, 2013.
The Veterans Memorial is designed to honor military and law enforcement veterans that are affiliated with San Juan County.
The memorial building will feature photographs of those who were combat deaths. In addition, a book will profile those who served, including those killed in the service, Purple Heart recipients and Prisoners of War.
Organizers ask for community help to locate information and photographs, of the Veterans featured in the memorial.
They are Denton Burrell Carroll, Dick Hooten Christensen, Marlin Clyde Dalton, Emil Enander Fincher, Benjamin L. Fitzgerald, Hernan Garcia, Jed Elwyn Harris, Karl Lloyd Hunt, Amasa Lyman Jones III, Weston K. Keen, John Paul Kimmerle, Alma Robert Mangum, Leroy Marshall Pullman, and Jimmie Charles Scrogum.
Anyone with information is asked to call 435-678-2791 or email email@example.com.
Blanding Mayor Toni Turk stressed the need for correct information to improve the records.
Turk announced to the Blanding City Council on January 8 that law enforcement personnel will be added to the memorial effort, in addition to military service members.
Turk said anyone who served in law enforcement is invited to submit information. Current active duty lofficials must submit their own data.
So far, volunteers have donated $32,000 toward the $50,000 project, with a host of pledges of in-kind donations.
“We are close enough to move ahead with construction,” said Turk. “But to do everything we need to do at the level that we need to do it, we need more money or donations.”
Donors will be recognized in the facility for contributions of $500, $1,000 and $5,000.
