THE ROUND-UP
by Tad Barton

The San Juan Broncos volleyball team wrapped up their season this week at the Utah 2A State Tournament in Orem, Utah.

The Lady Broncos ultimately fell short of their goal of winning the championship but left fans and each other with some great memories from a great year of volleyball.

In their first round match up San Juan faced off against Kanab. Things didn’t look to good for the Broncos as they dropped the first two sets to Kanab 17-25, 18-25.

Losing those sets gave San Juan a bit of a wake-up call as they bounced back to claim the third and fourth sets 25-23, 25-19. The final set of the match was anything short of boring as both teams slugged it out to earn the right to advance to the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The Broncos finally prevailed edging Kanab 22-20.

The win over Kanab earned the Broncos the right to play Rowland Hall in the quarter-finals. San Juan jumped out to a convincing 25-17 win in the first set.

The Winged Lion fought back in the second set but the Broncos proved once again to be too much winning that set 25-22 before they finished off Rowland Hall in the third set 25-18.

Day two of the tournament found San Juan facing off against the reigning champs Enterprise.

The Wolves came out of the gates hungry and before the Broncos knew it they had lost the first set 16-25. Undeterred San Juan dug in deep in the second set stealing the momentum back from the Wolves with a 25-23 win.

The Broncos carried that momentum into the third set and seemed to be in control of the match. Enterprise had other plans as they stole control of the set and match downing the Broncos in the third set 19-25.

San Juan continued to fight in the fourth set but, eventually fell to the Wolves 20-25.

The loss put the Broncos into the consolation bracket where they would be challenged by Region 15 foe South Sevier for the third place trophy.

San Juan and South Sevier split their series in region play with both teams winning on their home courts during the regular season.

The Broncos jumped out to a two set lead as San Juan claimed the first and second sets 27-25, 25-18.

With the match on the line South Sevier fought back in the third set sneaking past the Broncos 24-26. San Juan won the fourth set 25-19 and in the process won the match, claiming third place in Class 2A.

The Broncos say good-bye to three seniors on this year’s volleyball team: Jade Palmer, Jesse Ivins and Tatiana Su’eSu’e.

All three of these young ladies were key contributors to the team’s success over the past few years.

Thank you for the memories and good luck in your future endeavors.
