A man was killed while rock climbing on a popular route in Indian Creek Canyon on March 12.

Mark Davis, age 50 of Salt Lake City, suffered major head trauma when he fell while climbing at Rambo Wall. Law enforcement officials said the 20-foot fall was likely the result of equipment or rope failure. They add that Davis was not wearing a protective helmet.

San Juan County Search and Rescue crews were notified of the accident at about 7 p.m. The San Juan County Sheriff’s Office dispatched search and rescue crews to the scene, as well as a medical helicopter. However, Davis had passed away from his injuries when the crews arrived.

An investigation is underway to determine how the equipment failed.
