Students from Monticello Elementary School and Monticello High School, nearly 600 in all, marked the end of the school year with a celebration. The students helped raise more than one million pennies in a project that needed more than 1,600 pennies for every student in the schools. The pennies are contained in the 40 jars in front of the students. Each jar weighs approximately 140 pounds. The penny drive was a key element in a fund raising project to build a new swimming pool in Monticello. The new pool is scheduled to open July 1, giving these students something more to do during summer vacation. Staff photo
