The race includes a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike race and 13.1 mile run. Racers started at Sand Hollow Reservoir with a new wave of racers starting every three minutes, based on age. The water temperature in Sand Hollow Reservoir is 60 degrees in early May.
After completeing the swimming leg, racers biked from Sand Hollow to St. George and then up to Snow Canyon and back to St. George. The running leg of the race, a half marathon, began in downtown St. George and went up to Red Cliffs Parkway and back. It is known as the toughest course on the Ironman circuit.
