Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Herma Lea Conn Johnson age 83, quietly completed her earthly mission, March 7, 2012, in St George UT. A quiet peace and tender sadness surrounds her family as we say goodbye to this remarkable woman.
She was born November 18, 1928 in Moab, UT, daughter of Leah and Herman Conn. Her father, Herman, drowned four months before Herma was born. As a result, Leah’s parents, John and Stella Perkins, were a great influence and help in raising Herma. She spent many happy days with them in Dry Valley chasing cows and hunting for wood. Though money was tight, her mother insisted she take piano lessons. She found she was much better at playing the piano than at riding a horse and stuck with it. Herma loved to play and spent many years on a piano bench playing and accompanying others.
Herma fell in love with a boy from Horsehead. She and Rex Johnson were married on December 1, 1945. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in 1946. Their first home was a granary, and they patched together a kitchen with some orange crates tipped on their sides. It was a bit of a shock to a girl from town, but she made a go of it and soon came to love Eastland.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served faithfully in many callings.
Herma was a gifted piano player/singer, and did much to serve. She and Rex served an LDS Mission in the Rapid City South Dakota Mission.
She loved to travel and see the country. She and Rex went everywhere in their motor home.
“Grandma’s house was the best place to be on a Sunday night, for popcorn, sweets, cards, and a good visit. She inherited her gift for storytelling from her mother and kept a journal all her life.”
Surviving her are her husband, Rex; children, Diane Tracy (Allan), Bill Johnson (Julie), Connie Hunt (Jerome), Debra Robinson, Scott Johnson (Liesel), and Penny Woodbury (Spencer); thirty-four grandchildren and thirty-six great-grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by her parents, Herman and Leah Conn; step sister Jean; step father John Bartell; infant son Don Rex; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Funeral Services were held March 10, at the Eastland LDS Chapel. Interment in the Mountain View Cemetery, Eastland UT.
