After an accident and extended repairs, the John Atlantic Burr Ferry may be open for only two months this summer.

It was reported at the April 21 work meeting of the San Juan County Commission that the ferry, which connects Highway 276 between Halls Crossing Marina in San Juan County and Bullfrog Marina in Kane County, has been damaged.

After expensive repairs have been completed, some involving rare parts that must be imported, a series of inspections will be required.

At the current time, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) estimates that July 1 will be the earliest date that the ferry can begin operations in 2014.

The ferry generally operates until September 1 each year.

San Juan County officials have long been at odds with UDOT officials over the operation of the ferry service.

An April 30 meeting between the county and UDOT has been scheduled to discuss the issue.
